Dear Body July 30, 2010

Dear Body,

Let me just preface by saying that I do appreciate you. However, you are confusing! I tested you at midnight and you were at 218. I gave you the insulin that’s required to bring you down. Woke up and tested and was at 287. WTF?! Hopefully it’ll come down now and I can be set for eating lunch. Meanwhile, YAWN! When we go high, it makes me sleeeeeeepy. It’s so hard for me to concentrate on the endless work meetings in this state. Must persevere. If the pump isn’t working, no worries, I have a pen full of insulin thanks to Ruth.

So, let’s do this. Let’s hit normal and have a fun day! Go body and Becca!

Love you,

Thankful Thursdays July 29, 2010

It’s that time of the week again. Some more items I am thankful for…

1. The rain pouring down that is supposed to leave us with cooler weather and less humidity.

2. Insulin.

3. Peaches

4. Last night’s chicken dinner with a good friend. Always love a convo that stories interrupt stories over and over again because each person is bubbling to talk.

5. The farmer’s market – good for me, good for the earth.

6. My “lunch bunch.” I love the peeps I hang out with most weeks days around 11:30. Funny, funny folks.

7. The sign on my cube that says “When I get sad, I stop being sad and be AWESOME instead. TRUE STORY.” It cracks me up.

8. Being able to pay the bills.

9. The friend that brought me diet ginger ale and crackers when I was too sick to make it to the store last weekend.

10. E-mails from afar that are filled with loooooooove!

10a. The people reading my blog.

New tool July 28, 2010

I’ve mentioned I need to be healthier, which would cause weight loss. I’ve never been great at tracking food and such though. I have done WW online and do think it’s helpful but hate that I end up paying when I don’t use it too. So, today I found a new tool – DailyPlate. It’s free! And it’s pretty cool. I am starting using it today and will give occasional updates. Check it out if you need help tracking for health and/or weight loss!

Feeling better! July 27, 2010

I ate my first non-cracker food mid-day on Sunday and seemed to do better after that. I was signed up in a golf tournament yesterday and was glad to not have to miss it. Anyone that knows me, knows I have pretty much no natural, athletic ability. As a kid I was pretty much always the last person to be picked for a team. To be a girl AND to be chubby..not often a first pick! However, as an adult, I play a ton of sports and am including golf in that category. I don’t stress, curse, worry. I just go out with friends a few times a year and play “best ball” and enjoy being in the sun. Yesterday was PERFECT weather for it – no humidity and 90. I was gone from home the same amount of time as working. 🙂

Glad to be back at work today and returning to normal life.

Sick day July 24, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — singlewhitediabetic @ 3:57 pm

I woke up yesterday not feeling great, but not horrible. That switched around bed time last night. I was up every thirty minutes through the night. Today I realized that one of the issues with not having central air is there is no air in the bathroom. When you are sick enough to basically move in and it’s 100 degrees outside….not good. Not that it’s fun to be sick. My stomach has HURT pretty solidly for 16 hours. I’ve only eaten a few crackers and had diet ginger ale and water to drink. Yes, I’m testing plenty and a friend brought some Starburst over in case I go low.

So I don’t know if it’s food poisoning or a flu. I know I don’t like it.

I had fun plans for today too. 😦

I am testing and taking insulin to correct for the expected sick highs.

Thankful Thursdays July 22, 2010

I read about Thankful Thursday and decided to participate. Thinking about things I’m thankful for always makes me feel happy. So each Thursday I’ll list the first things to come to mind. Today’s may be the more obvious.

1. Lots of love and wonderful relationships with friends/family in my life. I’m very fortunate.

2. This dog that likes to give me kisses in the morning and is super happy when I get home. I love her so much and am thankful that she’s been there to turn to for silly smiles.

3. A good job with flexibility, interesting work and a great boss.

4. A house full of art and books.

5. A car that works.

6. Box fans to help the window units. My mom was so smart to recommend I get some!

7. Lots and lots of laughter.

8. BSSC team that doesn’t mind my lack of athletic ability when we play softball/football/kickball/volleyball.

9. Swimming pools

10. Good doctors. If I can’t have good health, I can have good doctors.

More to come!

More doctor love July 21, 2010

I thought that, although this is a diabetes blog, I could share what I love about another doc too.

Today I saw my gyn. I was a bit nervous when I walked in and she was freaking out on her staff about finding a way to get a patient up on the table. Then when she called me back instead of a nurse, I add confusion to the nerves. She immediately said, “Did you hear all that?” and I laughed and told her I did. She said, “don’t worry, I don’t take it out on my patients.”

Then she asked about my Annabelle (pup) and Chloe (cat). I showed her my pump and she expressed sympathy at my marked-all-over belly. Then she grabbed me a gown and said, “You know what to do.”

When she came back in, the exam was quick and easy with lots of funny joking around. She’s sarcastic and I like that. She’s also very up front. She told her nurse then to weigh me and get my blood pressure. I told her I had them done two days ago one floor up, so she accepted those numbers. When I told her my weight I said, “I know it’s high.” She said, “yeah, do something about that, will ya?” I told her I was working on it and she assured me that she knew I could make it.

Less than an hour in and out with lots of laughing and head-shaking. I like that. Not to say I “like” the exam, but it’s not the worst thing in the world.
