I read about D-Feast Friday this morning and am feeling hungry already. I’m looking forward to sharing AND getting ideas from others.

kinks July 19, 2010

Saturday was to be a very exciting, fully day. I woke up and put in a new pump and sensor. However, I did this on my way out the door and after my sensor had time to “wet” I realized I didn’t have a cover/adhesive for it. Crap. Okay, well, I figured I’d just be careful and watch it. It did bleed a lot so I wanted to get from it what I could.

Then I went and dropped off my wonderful St. Bernard, Annabelle to stay the night with a friend. Check.

Then I went to a favorite restaurant where I was dropping off concert tickets that I was selling to a stranger. Check.

A bit ahead of schedule and realized it was 1 and I hadn’t eaten. I test and am at 189 so I bolus for the high and my meal.

Went out on a date and had two beers. Good time.

Head to the hotel to meet up with the bachelorette party. As I was preparing my little purse I check and get a 351. Um…um…um. Okay, so I didn’t bring back-up pump supplies because i was only going away for one night. Crud. No back-up insulin either. Crud. So I pull out the pump site and sure enough there’s a big kink that shows why my body is not getting any insulin.

I then take the one (used) needle in my purse and draw some insulin out of the pump reservoir. I spent the next four hours rage bolusing like this with no success. I got down to 268 at one point but then went back over 300 not long after.

I ended up abandoning the bachlorette party to go home and deal. I felt bad, since this was for a dear friend, but didn’t really feel like I had a choice. Oh, and I ran out of strips from all the testing. Why didn’t I bring a back up bottle?

I was annoyed with myself for not being better prepared. I know my excuse was that I would be away from home for less than 24 hours, but I did know it was a new site and this “could” happen, though it normally doesn’t.

I’m back to normal now. I happen to go see my endo today though I won’t have my A1C yet – should get it in the next week. I just printed out all my reports and am consistently running a little high (not like the 350) so am hoping we make some changes.

Darn diabetes. Darn kinks. Darn not being prepared!

Next try = pass July 14, 2010

After Monday’s lunch “fail” I wanted to share that I did have a great, easy dinner with friends. I went to my friends house and took pita wraps, sliced onion, zucchini, bell peppers, baked chicken, avocado and feta. She had some fresh spinach and hummus. We sat it out and everyone made their own wraps. It was filling and DELICIOUS. Also, nice for no cooking on a summer’s eve since I had baked the chicken on Sunday.

I brought in the ingredients to have the above for lunch today too. Yummy to my tummy! Oh, and pretty darn low in carbs so my levels stayed nice and even. Woohoo!

Lunch = FAIL, also CGM update July 12, 2010

I guess preparation doesn’t guarantee success! I think the problem with my lunch today was some of the veggies weren’t from this most recent pick-up. I also included carrots, which I’ve never liked. So I threw my steam bag in the microwave and then poured it in a bowl. It looked pretty with all the colors. Bite. Blech. Bite. Blech. Bite. OMG, can I even swallow this? The chicken was “fine.”

I grabbed a bag of chips from the vending machine.

I read some tips on how to make the steaming a little tastier and might try tomorrow or might throw out the prepared bag and make something fresh.

I live, I learn.

I also realized I haven’t updated on the CGM lately. I have probably worn it half the time I have it. Overall, I love the data but hate the device. It HURTS and leaves sores. It’s also needy – forget to test before bed and that thing is going to wake me up to test. I don’t like that sometimes the variation between the real numbers is so large (20-40%). BUT, I do feel safer when I have it on. I can take a quick look to see what changes are happening without having to test non-stop. So, I’ll keep trying, but imagine it won’t be non-stop.

Monday and optimistic

I had a lot of down time over the weekend and felt the relieve of cooler weather moving in. I guess it revived something. I went to the farmer’s market on Saturday to pick up my goodies from my CSA. This week I picked up cucumbers, peppers, carrots and snap peas. Then last night I decided I really wanted to make myself use them this week. So I did something called preparing. I don’t normally prepare when it comes to food. So I cooked up some chicken breasts for the next few days and I chopped and sorted veggies. At the very least I’m removing the excuse of saying I don’t feel like cooking.

Today, for lunch, I brought a steam bag half filled with broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and a bit of onion that I can microwave when ready. I brought one of the chicken breasts too. Admittedly, it doesn’t sound quite as good to me as getting a wrap from downstairs, but I think that’s partly a mental thing.

I know, however, that I need to lose weight and save money…so this is a renewed attempt. It’s no set diet plan – it’s just eating foods that I know are healthier. I’m trying to be kind to this ol’ body.

When the pump site hurts… July 7, 2010

I’m pretty sure I have a crinked up infusion set in right now. I put in a new site this morning and it hurt. When it hurts, it almost always means it’s not going to work. But I was already running late so I left it. So now I’m at work flirting with 300’s and no backup stuff to change it out. I might have to work from home this afternoon or at least do a quick run to the house.

The good news – it’s Wednesday already! And tomorrow is supposed to be a little cooler. And I’m sure when I go home I can get the numbers down in an hour or two.

Heat

This heat seems to make me cranky and dramatic – both in my head and with the diabetes. Last night, on the hottest day of the year so far, my electricity went out. Both the temperature and my blood sugar shot up pretty immediately. Lovely. And I’m having trouble getting down to range today. And I’m exhausted from the lack of sleep due to the electricity issues. Me and my diabetes need a cool nap!
