Gearing up October 31, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — singlewhitediabetic @ 7:33 pm

I’ve been ready to make some changes in my life for a while but was a bit in denial and also wasn’t really sure where to start. Now I’m ready. I’m going to start some of the changes with a three-day (minimum) detox/cleanse recommended by Food Matters. It’s going to allow me to break some of the habits I’ve had as of late. I did all the shopping for it over the weekend (some at the local farmer’s market and some at a fancy grocery store). The only real cooking of food is a serving of brown rice with lunch so I cooked that up tonight. I’m excited about it. I even bought a juicer for it, which I plan to keep using after, of course.

Diabetes wise, it’s very friendly. Other than the brown rice there are very few carbs (just some from veggies). For the detox/cleanse, I realistically expect to cut my daily insulin intake in half.

I plan to blog every day to report how it’s going and what my blood sugars look like.

This week has been a bit heavy for me … gearing up for what I think are some necessary changes, but also fully recognizing that they won’t be easy. And so what I’m super thankful for in my life right now is SUPPORT!

Support of:

1. My dreams
2. My hopes
3. My goals
4. My weaknesses (and overcoming them)
5. My potential
6. My work
7. My health
8. My talents
9. My personality
10…………..ME

I am so grateful to have the people in my life that I do. Life isn’t always easy, but it’s always easier with love and support.

Thank you, my friends and family….thank you.

I have a culturally diverse work team…which I love and appreciate. Everyone knows I’m diabetic and sometimes when they are offering food they will make comments about asking if I can have something or “Rebecca probably can’t have this” and it’s okay – I correct them if needed.

Today, however, I am trying to go pumpless (was thinking for the weekend but am rethinking) and after lunch was just a lot higher than I expected to be so was shooting up and waiting for it to come down. Well, one of my guys went out and bought cookies at lunch as his “good-bye” gift to our team. He emailed us all to have one. I deleted it. Then he specifically said I should have “just one” and I told him my levels were already high so I was going to pass (i’m not a huge sweets fan, anyway). Ten minutes later he brings all the cookies to my desk and asked me to please have one.

Funny. I was just laughing to myself that it’s the opposite of the norm.

I took one and sat it on my desk. And there it sits. 🙂

There was some church song I loved growing up that had this “I got a feeling, everything is going to be alright” and it’s stuck in my head right now. Worse things to be stuck in my head!

Some things that I’m thankful for this third week of October:

1. Drain-o. Is that weird? I thought something was really wrong with my kitchen sink but a couple of rounds with this magic product has it draining just like it should.

2. Home Depot. Thanks to organization it was quite easy to find the first fridge bulb I’ve ever had to buy. Who knew that $1.50 and about 1 minute would have me back in business and able to see which food I need to throw out.

3. Project Go-Lives! Maybe this should have been #1. I’ve been on a project for over 18 months and it finally went into production…pretty smoothly. Woot!

4. Helping a friend cook dinner. Some yummy sweet potatoes (cubed, seasoned, baked), spinach souffle and a pretty salad…quite delicious and healthy. All those veggies were locally grown which leads me to…

5. Being part of a CSA (community supported agriculture). Great to know what’s in season and have it paid for every week just waiting for me to pick it up.

6. Having a friend to attend a new church with me this Sunday. Been looking to add some type of religion back to my life and so it’s good to have support for that.

7. Improvements on my cold front. Not 100% but steadily improving.

8. The simple beauty of fall. So pretty – all those oranges, yellows and reds.

9. A good visit with my endo. It wasn’t a perfect report but I’m glad I’m in a position to be able to get the medical treatments that make my disease manageable.

10. That my St. Bernard hasn’t out-grown laying her head on my chest or sitting in my lap.

It’s a good life.

Seeing the endo is kind of like getting 9 week grades in school. Ever three months I get blood work done and then have to go into see the teacher, I mean doctor, to talk about it. I was dreading this time since I knew I just had not kept my numbers low enough. I haven’t been wearing the monitor or taking pills like I should. But, i still went in and the visit was nice. I try my best to be very honest with her and know that will help me in the long run.

So we tightened up some numbers. I committed to trying my monitor half the time and to taking medicine daily.

Oh, for the diabetics, the A1C had gone from an okay 6.8 to 7.2. I wanna stay below 7 and i know I can be there when I go back in January.

I kind of feel like the “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can” train.

Cold October 18, 2010

This darn cold is wreaking some havoc on my body. I keep thinking it’s getting better and then it reverts back. Yesterday and today have been particularly rough. I see my endo today and wonder if she’ll stay enough to give me something for the cough…I hope so!

Is it really only 11? I am feeling quite thankful and glad for my experience of life. Then things this week.

1. That one of my most awesome BFF’s is settling in well in a new town!

2. Diabetic Tussin. That stuff is working magic.

3. The fun of social football – caught FIVE passes last week..not that I was counting. Yes, one was a TD.

4. A super nice visit with my “little sister” on Wednesday at lunch. She’s awesome-blossom.

5. Great neighbors.

6. Recycling day – it clears out my house!

7. An amazing friend that did my brakes for me – saving hundreds of dollars over going to the shop that said I needed them done.

8. Babies, babies, soon they will be everywhere. Quite happy for…1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 of my friends! Woah, Nelly!

9. The coworkers that make fun of my bad jokes. Seriously, at the end of a meeting one of my dudes said, “Okay, Becca, any bad jokes?” haha. Called out!

10. “My pockets may be empty, but my spirits, man, they’re full.” (from a Caleb Stine song). So true, my friend, so true.
