Diabetes Blog Week – Day Two

Today’s Prompt:  Living with diabetes (or caring for someone who lives with it) sure does take a lot of work, and it’s easy to be hard on ourselves if we aren’t “perfect”.  But today it’s time to give ourselves some much deserved credit.  Tell us about just one diabetes thing you (or your loved one) does spectacularly!  Fasting blood sugar checks, oral meds sorted and ready, something always on hand to treat a low, or anything that you do for diabetes.  Nothing is too big or too small to celebrate doing well!

What do I do spectacularly?  That’s a harder question than I thought it would be.   There are things I do…check my bg multiple times a day, stay stocked up on supplies, treat my lows and highs, carb-guess, take my medicines and so on.

I am going to go with – seeing doctors and speaking up!  I, generally, keep the following appointments in one year:
–Endocrinologist 3-4 times
–Eye doctor – 1 time
–Dentist – 2 times
–Podiatrist – 1 time
–Gynecologist – 1 time
–Retina Specialist – 2 times
–On demand – as many times as needed

When I see these guys and gals, I try my best to speak up and be honest even when I know the answer might earn me a lecture or a frown.  I review my blood work and ask questions.  I try to stay educated on all of the things they should be looking at and understanding it as well as I can.  I don’t have any desire to become a doctor of any type, but I want to understand my body.  Ultimately, regardless of what they tell me in our 10-60 minutes together, I’m the one that has to do the work the other 99% of the time.  Niether of us are perfect, but it’s most important that I do my best with what I know.
